Zipp 404 Firestrike Carbon Clincher Rear Wheel

Product Description

General Information

The Zipp Firestrike platform allows Zipp to bring their most cutting edge innovations to market. It’s always limited edition, and when they’re gone, they’re not coming back. At least not until they’re improved. This is Version Two of the Zipp 404 Firestrike Clincher Rear Wheel.

These innovations have been imagined in the office and tested in the lab by Zipp engineers, and validated in the field by Zipp-sponsored pro’s. Eventually, the new features that debut on a Firestrike will make their way into the Zipp line. For the meantime, they’re limited to Firestrike.

The big improvements to V2 are better, thinner ImPress graphics, better, longer-throw titanium skewers, Silca valve extenders, and standard CeramicSpeed ceramic hybrid bearings coated in CeramicSpeed road grease.

While the 58mm deep rim might look familiar, it has some major differences. The production process itself yields a rim that is lighter, stronger, more impact resistant, and more consistent from rim to rim to rim. The shape is also different. The 404 Firestrike has a 26.4mm exterior width at the brake track, similar to the 303 Firecrest. It gets wider as it moves toward the spoke bed, to 27.8mm at the widest, wider than the 404 Firecrest by 1.27mm. They further tuned the ABLC dimple pattern. The pattern is visibly different than earlier iterations, a new design created to minimize the dreaded vector-shedding phenomenon, where the wind pressure builds on one point of the wheel and then dumps, reducing pressure dramatically. Ever see a flag ripple in a strong wind?  The rippling is from vector shedding; it not only can increase resistance, but also make steering harder. By changing the shedding, by first minimizing the possibility then tuning the rim for higher frequency and shorter duration, there's less force pushing the wheels around. It’s not only more aero than a regular 404, but more stable in crosswinds.

Zipp found a new texture, Silicon Carbide, to add to the brake track. It improves braking in all conditions. Since that wasn't enough, they molded channels into the brake track to better disperse water. They're small enough and close enough together that there is no pulsing or gripping in the dry. In the wet, they're designed to channel water away from the braking surface. As a result, wet-weather braking will not feel as if you're waiting for the pads to squeegee water. Zipp calls this Showstopper technology and their testing has found it results in better braking than the average aluminum rim, and equal braking to industry-leading aluminum rims.

Lighter. While they were able to better manipulate carbon and resin to save weight at the rim, the bigger advances happen in a few other places. The Zipp decals of old have been replaced with screen-printed graphics. The graphics are not only lighter than stickers, but also don't interrupt the dimple pattern, which is a benefit to aerodynamics as well. The rear hub, the 188v10 has been relieved of all unnecessary material. It might look like it possesses taller flanges, but that's just the excess material removed to create a lighter, equally strong skeletonized shape.

The hubs, btw, have been improved as well. They've had the pre-load wings of the earlier iteration removed (no pre-load, nor adjustability needed), The hubset overall has gotten a 20g diet from the v9 iteration, and it possesses 5% greater lateral stiffness, and 25% greater torsional stiffness than the popular DT240 hubset.

The wheel is packaged with a black titanium Zipp skewer, a Zipp-branded Silca valve extender, Zipp rim tape, Zipp 23mm wide tube, Zipp Platinum Pro brake pads, and a Zipp individual wheel bag. You choose between a Shimano/SRAM 9/10/11-speed cassette body and a Campagnolo 9/10/11-speed cassette body. (they can be swapped later)

The Zipp 404 Firestrike Clincher Rear Wheel Version Two is limited to a run of just 404.
