3T Orbis II C35 LTD Clincher Wheelset

Product Description

General Information

When you want every advantage possible in a carbon clincher wheelset tilted toward altitude, the 3T Orbis II C35 LTD Clincher Wheelset is there for you. It’s got full carbon rims, it’s got the best aero spokes, it rolls on CeramicSpeed bearings.

Wide-rimmed, aero wheels that are still light is something everyone can use. Here, they focus a bit more on the weight aspect, making this a bit more of a wheel for the hills, but only a bit. It’s still pretty aero, it’s just that the weight is down to 1435g for the set.

They start with their 35mm deep. 24.5mm wide full-carbon clincher rim. It’s the same rim you’ll find on the Team wheel, but everything else has been improved. All the same, the rim is a good starting point. Wide rims, when paired with wider tires, are more aero than wide tires on narrow rims, and the benefits of wide go beyond aero. Here, you won’t want to install a tire narrower than 23mm, though 24-26mm will still result in a nice double-U shape with the rims (the leading and trailing edges are roughly equally aero). Super-wide tires, like 28mm will work, and is more aero than a 28mm tire on a 19mm rim, but the aero advantage is reduced. The second advantage is more air volume, which gives two benefits, lower rolling resistance and more comfort at a given air pressure. Of course, you can safely improve both by dropping air pressure a bit as well.

While 3T employs their standard lightweight road hubs, they also upgrade the hubs with CeramicSpeed bearings. If you look around this site, you can read about the benefits of the bearings in greater detail. All the same, the short version is that ceramic ball bearings are lighter and stronger than steel balls. And their greater surface hardness and greater uniform roundness means they roll with less friction than steel balls. Furthering this, is the reduced need for a thick grease to coat the bearings. The result is a serious drag reduction compared to standard bearings, something you benefit from regardless of how fast you’re going.

Laced into the hubs are Sapim’s CX-Ray spokes. These butted, stainless steel, straight-pull spokes, are the aerodynamic standard in spokes. And it’s not just that they’re aero, they’re also really light and really strong. The spokes are laced to internal alloy nipples that turn on spherical washers. The internal nipples improve aerodynamics, and the smaller drill hole combined with the washers strengthens the interface between the nipple and the rim.

3T quick releases are also included. So, too, are rim strips. The rims are not compatible with tubeless tires.

The wheelset comes standard with a Shimano/SRAM 10/11-speed compatible cassette body. Also with the wheel come 3T carbon-specific brake pads, which are designed to fit in Shimano/SRAM-compatible brake shoes. If you prefer Campagnolo-compatible cassettes and/or Campagnolo brakes, a Campy-compatible body and Campy-compatible pads are sold separately.

The 3T Orbis II C35 LTD Clincher Wheelset is for when you want it all.
