2016 Scott Big Jon Bike

Product Description

General Information

Big Jon and Big Ed are brothers. They look alike, share a personality. Scott has made Big Jon the cheaper date. Other than the fork, which is rigid here, they are extremely tight, going so far as to share shoes.

Think float, think tractor-pull, think monster truck, think joyride. The huge 4.8” tires mounted on 80mm wide rims float in swamps, snow, mud, sand, and can roll over just about everything. The wheels provide stability, traction, and fun. The position the frame puts you in is safely on top of the wheels, with a reach that’s as comfortable for a dawdle with little kids as it is for sweating buckets on long climbs.

This is an excellent example of what the species known as fat bikes has to offer. They may have been created for seemingly esoteric purposes like riding in deep snow in the winter or sandy beaches in the summer, but people found out that when they just took them around, they elicited a feeling of joy not unlike the first time anyone swung a leg over a velocipede as a child. And this feeling is why people take them downtown for café runs as well as epic backwoods adventures.

Going is important. But so is stopping. Stopping, thanks to Shimano hydraulic disc brakes is as easy as going. There’s a 180mm rotor in front, 160mm in rear, offering both power and modulation. The Shimano Deore drivetrain components are solid and receive a performance boost by the XT rear derailleur. It’s a low 2x10 system with a 36/22 crank mated to an 11-36 cassette.

Save the drivetrain and Schwalbe Jumbo Jim EVO tires, the component build is a medley of Syncros pieces. Syncros is Scott’s house brand, which means they’ve not only been able to specify exactly what they want, but also color-coordinate for a pro look, and cut out intermediate steps in the supply chain to keep prices down while performance remains high.
