2016 Look 979 GX1 Bike

Product Description

General Information

A bike should be no more complicated than necessary. Good hardtails go though a complicated design process to simplify and lighten up your riding. The Look 977/979 is one such bike. It is further simplified because it does without the integration of its fancier sibling, the 978/989. The result is greater component choices and a much lower price, but almost exactly the same ride.

First, a word on the naming convention. The 977 and 979 are basically the same design. The lower number works with 27.5” wheels while the higher number 29ers. Look believes that rider size and preference should be the determining factors when choosing between the two. They first recommend considering height. That is, people shorter than 1.73m (5’8”) should go with the 977. Folks between 1.73 and 1.78m (up to 5’10”) are in between and should choose based on riding preference. And those taller probably should opt for the 979. Weight for the 977 is 1270g for an M frame, 1300g for an M-sized 979.

The geometry, from chainstay length to bottom bracket drop to head angle, have all been tweaked to maximize performance at the respective wheel sizes. In general, the 27.5 (aka 650b) wheeled bike accelerates better, feels a bit livelier, and is a bit lighter. The 29er is more stable, grips a bit better, rolls over stuff a bit better, and is a bit better at holding high speeds. This is due to Look adjusting the head angle. 27.5 bikes have a 70.6-degree head while 29ers have a 71.3-degree. And both are designed to work best with forks featuring 100mm of travel.

It’s a hardtail. There’s no getting around that fact. But it’s a hardtail that has been dramatically softened without resorting to the complexity, weight, and slop of full-suspension. To give you comfort and traction in back, they utilize a dramatically-sloping, flattened top tube and their DCSC, Dual Comfort and Stiffness Concept. In between, to keep a sense of connection with the bike at the end of the long seat post, Look opted for a 31.6mm diameter post. The larger diameter allows for just the right amount of post flex thanks to the fact that it is unsupported above the seatpost clamp.

To keep the bike stiff, they opted for the wide BB90 bottom bracket shell and dramatically-shaped chainstays. They’re pretty chunky by the bottom bracket, but they taper for the final bend up to the 12x142mm thru-axle. The front end is also torsionally-stiff thanks to the way the head and downtubes join behind the head tube.

As the world still can’t fully decide between single- and double-ring cranks, and electronic- and mechanical-shifting, the bike is set up to work with all of that. If you go the double, go for a front derailleur with a 34.9mm diameter band clamp. The single does without. Likewise, cables run internally and the battery goes inside as well. Both stops and plugs are included. The rear hydraulic brake line is designed to be routed on the outside of the downtube for ease of maintenance, and the rear brake mount is designed to work best with 160mm rotors.

The Look 977/979 cross country rig brings stiffness and comfort to a bike you can ride gladly all day at any speed.
