2016 Crank Brothers Cobalt 2 29" Wheelset

Product Description

General Information

If value for money is high on your checklist when deciding on a purchase, then the Crank Brothers Cobalt 2 Wheelset will certainly receive a few stars next to them. Privy to all the most important engineering solutions that the pricier Cobalt wheelsets have, the Cobalt 2s keep the price down with small economizations that do little to dampen the performance.

Keeping in mind these are wheels designed with XC and trail riding and racing in mind, you should have nothing but hours of pleasure running these over your favorite trails either in your home town or at your important backcountry races. They manage to keep the weight down by using 6061-T6 aluminum with a smooth weld joint for the rims that have become deeper at 19.5mm and wider at 21mm, though the tire bead wall heights have been reduced compared to earlier editions. Consequently the rims are laterally stiffer while being lighter. The shallower rim bead wall also is intended to make the Cobalt accommodate tubeless set ups even better, holding the tire more firmly in place. In fact, being tubeless ready with little to no extra fuss was one of the driving motivations behind the Crank Brothers design. The twinpair spoke technology threads the parallel spokes through eyelets at the rim without having to penetrate into the interior of the rim. That means that these are tubeless ready out of the box without any need for rim tape since the only exposed point is where the valve sits.

For a wheel, weight, of course, is important, but so is where that weight is focused. With that in mind, Crank Brothers have concentrated on building a wheel that inherently has a low rotational weight. Obviously using high-quality aluminum figures into that equation, but the overall design is where they really got clever. Looking at the twinpair spokes, you’ll notice that they are not the sort of spokes you are used to seeing. For the Cobalt 2, Crank Brothers have used a stainless steel butted spoke that will simplify everything from how the wheel is built up to how it can be trued. There is a short 2mm section of the spoke on the side that threads into the rim, which reduces the weight. Then the 139mm long nipples extend out from the hubs to meet the spokes halfway. By distributing the greater portion of mass closer to the hub, Crank Brothers gives the wheels a low rotational inertia, which means that they accelerate faster and will decelerate with ease as well. Since the spokes are twins and equal in length, which is 147mm for the Cobalt 2 27.5” and 166mm for the 29”, you can true and even replace them without having to remove the tire. Just a little weight is gained with the spoke pins that are a solid 7075-t6 aluminum instead of the hollow pins you’ll find on the Cobalt 3.

The brothers have redesigned their hubs with durability and performance in mind. Made from 6061-T6 aluminum as well, the hubs can withstand stresses way beyond what your XC demands may be. Two front hub end caps come with the packaging, with a 15mm installed, while a 9mm option is included. Similarly, the rear hub end caps come 12x142mm installed and 10x135mm included. The freehub uses a three-pawl set-up that is intended to give you immediate engagement once you put power through the pedals, while two sets of two sealed cartridge bearings will provide a smooth ride. The Cobalt hubs are also XD Driver compatible, though sold separately, in case you ride an XX1 set-up and want to drop down to a 10T. They are even e-bike compatible and can accommodate urban or XC e-bikes up to 350 watts.

Tipping the scales at 1710 grams for the 27.5” and 1790 for the 29”, the Crank Brothers Cobalt 2 Wheelset will give you the performance you need at a price you can easily stomach. Their two year warranty on materials and workmanship proves just how much the Crank Brothers stand behind their product.
