2015 Zipp 303 Firecrest Tubular Disc Wheelset

Product Description

General Information

When you’re looking to lighten up and improve the handling of your disc-brake crosser, the perfect wheelset might well be this set of Zipp 303 Tubular Disc wheels.

These have seen ample use under Jeremy Powers, the reigning king of American Cyclocross. He was an early adapter to disc brakes on his Focus Mares, as were fellow ‘crossers Tim Johnson, Ryan Trebon, and Kaitlin Antonneau, who put these wheels on their Cannondales.

That written, with disc brake road bikes gaining popularity, these could well be the race wheels if you’ve got that in your quiver. They’re obviously tough enough for ‘cross, but they’re also light enough for climbing, and aero enough for racing on the flats.

The Firecrest 303 tubular rim is probably the winningest rim in Zipp’s stable. Not only has it seen success in cyclocross, but it has been ridden to classics victories at Roubaix and Flanders, and Grand Tour stage wins in all terrain. It hits a sweet spot of all the attributes people want: toughness, weight, aerodynamics. Thanks to the shape of tubular rims, they’re even stronger than Zipp’s carbon clinchers.

The rim shape is 45mm deep with the brake track width 26.4mm, and a max width of 28.5mm. 22mm road tubulars fit, but you can go as wide as your frame allows, either in a road or cx tread.

The hubset is the 88D/188D. This is Zipp’s disc-brake specific model. It weighs in at 140g for the front, 260g for the rear, and the bearing pre-load is set at the factory. 24 straight-pull spokes arrayed in a two-cross pattern and populated with Sapim CX-Ray spokes for optimal aerodynamics. The rotors mounts on six bolts. Zipp, knowing that the ideal fixing mechanism for disc-brake wheels is still being debated, designed the front hub to work as a 9mm quick release, 12mm, and 15mm thru-axles. The rear can do 9mm quick release, as well as 12x135mm and 12x142mm thru-axles. It comes with the quick-releases, a long-throw lever designed to provide extra clamping power, but you change the method just by pulling off end caps and replacing them. All three sets come with the wheel. As you can imagine, these end caps also provide excellent shielding to keep water and grit away from the bearings.

You can choose which cassette body you need. Standard are either a 10/11-speed Shimano/SRAM-splined body or a Campagnolo 11-Speed body. You can also get a SRAM XD driver body, which is sold separately.

The wheels come with valve extenders. Total system weight is 1400g.

The Zipp 303 Firecrest Tubular Disc wheelset is ready for cross, ready for road, ready for the unknown.
