2015 Zipp 303 Firecrest Carbon Clincher Rear Wheel

Product Description

General Information

When it comes to Carbon Clinchers, this is probably the all-around performer. The Zipp 303 Firecrest Carbon Clincher is 45mm deep, which doesn't look like much these days. All the same, it is very aero, and at a weight that still makes it a good climber.
The Firecrest shape, with the wide width, 26.4mm at the brake track but 28.5mm a bit below, and the blunt end, not only cuts through the wind, but also handles cross-winds like few wheels out there. And the wide shape also decreases rolling resistance, improves grip, and even gives you more of an air cushion over rough roads.
This is the setup for people who want a serious aero edge on the flats while still climbing very well. And at this weight, it also accelerates quickly and easily.
While the drag numbers for the 303 are impressive, Zipp went back to the drawing board to improve their rear hub. They wanted greater lateral stiffness. And they got it. The larger shell, larger bearings, two-cross pattern yielded a wheel that demonstrates 25% greater stiffness than their leading competitor. So better driving, better turning, straighter lines, are all good, and you won't notice it in the least.
The wheels are delivered with quick release skewers, brake pads, rim strips,  valve extenders, and Zipp Tangente butyl road inner tubes. Remember to use only carbon-specific pads with your carbon rims, and never run them with aluminum rims. Zipp has taken innovation in their system to a new level with these tubes, which feature an aluminum, rather than brass, valve core. Lighter, better machined, and possessing a removable valve core. It also improves the balance of the spinning wheel. The wheels are not designed for compatibility with tubeless systems.
The 303's aerodynamics, as is the case with all wheels, are dependent on the relationship of rim depth to rim width. To work with this depth, they increased the width to the point that some frames have chain stays that are too narrow for the wheel to safely fit through. Two of these are the 2012 Specialized Tarmac SL4 and the S-Works Venge. Measure first.
The Zipp 303 Carbon Clincher is the all-rounders weapon of choice.
