2015 Orbea Oiz 27 M10 Bike

Product Description

General Information

The Orbea Oiz M10 Bike takes the same frameset as the Oiz Team, and economizes, shifting away from top-tier component spec, and offering up pieces that are more durable, if a little bit heavier.

The central feature is the Oiz frame. Orbea just redesigned their cross-country rig, and the efforts are impressive. They were able to both reduce weight and improve the ride by focusing on things big and small. Small is like the tapered 1 1/8” to 1 ½” steerer and the BB86 bottom bracket shell and improved direct post mount brake fittings. Moderate is the molded carbon-fiber rocker arm for the suspension. Big is how they both simplified and improved rear suspension overall. They eliminated pivots by the dropouts, bulked up the chain stays and thinned the seat stays—the stays are, in fact, molded as a left side and right side and bolted together and moving on sealed cartridge bearings. By doing this, they were able to improve both drivetrain efficiency and compliance. The stays can soak up small bumps without engaging the shock, and when the hit is big enough to engage, the action is linear, using all of the shock, and the rotation that used to happen at the seat stay pivots is now taken up by the seat stays flexing.

Orbea relies on Fox shocks. Fox Float CTD with slick Kashima coating, 100mm of travel and handlebar-mounted remote allow you to take care of the big tuning before the ride, and adjust to Climb, Trail, or Descend platforms on the ride. The design gives you the full 100mm of travel at the shock, and more with the flex, called UFO, at the stays.

The fork, the Fox 32 Float CTD, with Kashima-coated stanchions, is the brother of the shock. It has the same Climb Trail Descend damper, and a handlebar-mounted remote so you can adjust your platform as easily as you shift gears.

The build offers a mix of parts that have been carefully chosen to maximize performance, while keeping tabs on cost. The drivetrain is all Shimano, but it’s a mix of pieces. XT 38/24 crank and XT M780 shifters are mated to an XTR Shadow Plus rear derailleur, SLX direct mount front derailleur, and HG81 ten-speed 11-36 cassette. As the rear derailleur faces the most demands, they splurged on the performance benefits of Shimano’s most advanced rear changer, but saved elsewhere.

To keep costs down and performance high, they went with Formula R1 Hydraulic discs. The levers are strong, compact, with easy adjustments, and the calipers feature an oversized 22mm piston, which is moved by DOT4 fluid for better reliability across the temperature spectrum.

For rolling thunder, they opted for DT Swiss Spline X-1700 wheels. The tubeless ready rims are wide and strong, a great basis for a long relationship. Tires are where you can fine-tune performance characteristics, and the Maxxis Ikon 2.2” are supple, flat-resistant, and tubeless ready, with an all-condition tread that never leaves you fretting about tire choices.

Now, about those wheels. Orbea builds the Oiz both for 27.5” and 29” wheels. The Small is 27.5”, the Medium and Large are available both ways, the Extra Large as a 29” only. They do this because while they’re unabashed fans of big wheels, they know that for certain sized riders on certain terrain, smaller is better. The shortest among us will go for 27.5”, the largest 29”, but the rest of us, have a choice. Depends on your terrain and riding style.

The Orbea Oiz M10 Bike makes World Cup-level performance accessible to the self-sponsored.
