2015 Mavic Ksyrium Equipe S Clincher Wheelset

Product Description

General Information

When dealing with a company like Mavic, there is no such thing as bottom of the line. Though the Mavic Ksyrium Equipe S Clinchers may be the late adopters in terms of the types of innovations and technologies that we find first in products like the Ksyrium SLRs, they are still wheels that offer a great ride at an even better price.

The rims are made from S6000 Aluminum. It is a material that mixes lightness and durability, so that you will feel a snappy acceleration with these wheels, but you won’t feel blown about in a stiff side wind. Keeping the profile at a moderate 21mm also helps in giving the wheel a solid connection with the ground. Being aluminum experts, Mavic has developed a method to keep the rim joint stronger and smoother. After the rim is bent into shape, the joint is arc welded and then that seam is milled for a flush, almost imperceptible finish. In a typically French acronym, they call this their Soudé Usiné Process (SUP), or Welded Machined Process. Whether you remember what they call it, you will notice just how balanced the wheel rides, to the point that you will forget how brake shuddering even feels. Mavic does make use of their UB Control, which simply means that the braking surface is precisely CNC machined. That will ensure that your braking friction will get you slowed down fast without causing the bike to shudder and squeal when you have to slam on the brakes as 50 miles per hour.

The hubs get similarly advanced treatment with Mavic’s high efficiency hubs. Both front and rear hub bodies are made from aluminum and roll on steel axles. Light and durable hubs are only half the battle since so much depends on the bearings. You can be very pleased with the bearings Mavic uses their QRM sealed cartridge bearings. The bearings feature two rubber seals together with tight C3 internal clearance, making the wheels extremely efficient thanks to minimal play in the rotation. For the rear hub, Mavic employs what they call their FTS-L system, which is a lightweight method of securing the pawl to the hub body by using two stainless steel inserts. You may not be able to put your finger on it when you are riding, but the level of rolling efficiency this set-up provides will make these wheels glide so smoothly and effortlessly that you’ll feel like you hardly have to pedal.

The steel spokes are straight-pull for strength and bladed for aerodynamics. The brass nipples will hold the wheel rock solid without going out of true. The twenty spoke count front and rear will keep the wheel light and durable. And if you look closely at how Mavic has threaded the wheel, you might be surprised to see that though the 20 spokes are radially threaded at the front, on the rear wheel, Mavic has turned to their ISO Pulse lacing, which means that the drive side is radially laced and the non-drive side is cross-two laced. Mavic believes that this method maximizes drive side dish, thus providing a better spoke tension balance between left and right flanges. If having the radial lace on the drive side sounds counterintuitive to you, it makes perfect sense in Mavic’s world of thinking outside the box. The steel spokes are protected in the rim with the tried and true H2 technology, which is essentially a local strengthening of the rim immediately around the spoke, in the area where the rim withstands the greatest stress. Resisting micro-cracking, the H2 improved the rim’s overall life expectancy. And since Mavic is a leader in the notion of designing the tires that will best suit the wheels, they ship the Ksyrium Equipe S Clinchers with their Yksion Comp tire designed for the front and rear. At just 210 grams, it is a very light and durable tire with a single compound tread.

Mavic wheels come with a two-year warranty against defects. Mavic also has their MP3 Program. Short for Mavic Purchase Protection Plan, this is an extended coverage option. It is not required, but it is a cheap and cheerful way to buy some peace of mind—think crash insurance. You’ll need to buy MP3 through Mavic’s website within ten days of purchasing your Ksyrium Equipe S Clinchers, so be certain to get onto the Mavic site soon after you place your wheel order to get the details.  More information will be packaged with your wheels.

Mavic Ksyrium Equipe S Clinchers are shipped with BR101 quick releases and rim tape. Weighing a highly respectable 1690 grams without tires, these wheels will hold you in good stead whether you are climbing in the Italian Alps on vacation or toodling around with your kids on a Sunday morning ride.
