Mavic Cosmic Pro Carbon SL C Wheelset

Product Description

General Information

Mavic has not only upgraded their carbon clincher wheel designs, but has also pushed the entire category forward. Their Cosmic Pro Carbon SL C Wheelset represents a new direction in carbon wheel performance. This is their all-condition all-carbon clincher wheelset, at home on the flats and the hills, and durable enough for pavé, gravel, and ‘cross.

First, they worked with carbon and resin to find a way to create a durable wheel that doesn’t depend on an aluminum inner skeleton for strength and braking reliability. As you can imagine, that drops the weight of the rim a good bit. It’s 40mm deep, but still only weighs 450g. Front wheel weighs 645g and the rear 805g.

Even with that light weight, it is still strong and offers reliable braking. The former is thanks to the new width. 25mm is the outside width of the rim. This means the narrowest tire that works with the rim is also 25mm, and that provides a high-volume air cushion between the tire and rim, which also improves traction, lowers rolling resistance, and improves aerodynamics.

The braking has been improved both with heat-resistant resins and their new brake track treatment. Mavic pioneered machined aluminum brake tracks on aluminum rims, and their iTgMAX could well do the same for carbon rims. The acronym stands for internal glass transition temperature, and it’s high enough that the rim walls should never soften, even under long drags of high-speed braking. And the external walls have been finished with a laser machining process that increases the friction between pad and rim. They’ve found that the braking in the wet is nearly as consistent as the braking in the dry, which also means 50% shorter stopping distances in the wet.

The braking depends on using the SwissStop Yellow King pads. A set comes with the wheels, but any other brand’s pads void the warranty. When you start with a fresh set of pads, your first ride will result in some yellow brake dust being generated. But after that, the braking won’t generate quite so much wear.

The spokes and hubs are fairly traditional for Mavic, but are aero and lightweight by most standards. The spokes are drawn stainless steel blades, 18 front, 24 rear, with a straight-pull head and external nipples. The hubs have aluminum shells, with a flangeless front and an iso-pulse rear, with radial lacing on the drive side and two-cross on the non-drive. Cassette bodies are available in SRAM/Shimano and Campagnolo. In all cases 9/10/11-speed.

The wheel comes with BR601 quick releases, the aforementioned brake pads, rim tape, multi-function adjustment wrench, and user guide. The recommend tires no wider than 32mm, no narrower than 25mm. They recommend the max rider + bike weight as 120kg (264.5lbs). If you want to boost your protection on these Cosmic Pro SL C Wheels, Mavic has an extended coverage program, which can be found at care.mavic.com.
