2016 Scott Voltage FR 710 Bike

Product Description

General Information

Lots of bikes are said to be flickable. The Scot Voltage FR is flickable in all of its variations. It’s a freeride rig that is playful and flexible, making it many bikes in one.

The first thing it is, is durable. The Voltage takes advantage of hydroformed 6061 aluminum. 6061 can be light and strong, but here, it’s burly and much stronger. The hydroforming  helps shape the tubes so they’re putting more material in the plane you need it. For the one-piece rear end, the stuff is simply tough, and where it pivots, it turns on oversized bearings. Tough enough that Scott runs the cables through the rear end internally to minimize the annoying slap that can happen if left exposed. There’s even a one-piece welded rocker link that ensures the rear wheel doesn’t get pushed out of alignment. Chain guides top and bottom ensure that the chain isn’t falling off ever.

There’s also insurance built into the frame. The standover height is pretty generous, even for shorter riders. This way, you feet slipping off won’t threaten your future, or even a bruise.

One of Scott’s calling cards in the knobby world is how each bike contains many personalities. The Voltage does this by allowing you to choose the head angle, rear travel, wheel size, and even chainstay length and rear dropouts. And depending on which Voltage you choose, also the fork style and travel there as well.

The head angle comes stock at 64-degrees. However. However, the 1.5” steerer runs on a Syncros headset that is designed to be adjusted by up to two degrees, as shallow as 62-degrees and as steep as 66, thanks to included angled cups. The rear travel can be 190mm or 170mm and is adjustable by flipping the shock mount, a change you’ll be able to execute in a few minutes. The chainstay length comes set up at 425mm, which works with the stock 27.5 wheels, but the IDS-X dropouts, which hold the wheel securely and themselves allow for 135x10 or 135x12 axles, quick release, bolt-on, or thru-, can be moved forward by 15mm if you swap in 26” wheels. And the fork that comes with the bike comes stock with either 200 or 180mm of travel.

Aiding the ride is a low bottom bracket. 345mm high unloaded. This makes the bike stable in all conditions, though the low height makes 165mm cranks necessary. As this bike is not made for that much cranking and not really about climbing, the stubby length is good. It’s perfect for acceleration-short cranks are also what track racers use. Revving up at the start and then holding on is where short arms shine brightest.

The bike is super-confident jumping and dipped in doo when rolled into bike parks. If you guess wrong, the bike will save your keister thanks to its mobility. If you land wrong, the frame is tough enough to handle it and the suspension will compensate.

If you find yourself wanting to work more on jumps than anything else, swap in the 26” wheels, slack the front, tuck in the back.

The adjustability also gives you the room to make this bike your downhill rig. Make sure you go with the longest travel you can as well as the slackest front end.

The Scott Voltage FR is a bike that wants you to be king of the park.
