2016 Scott Gambler 710 Bike

Product Description

General Information

The Scott Gambler contains multitudes. It is a singular bike in that way. Scott designed this as a pure downhill ride, but with a personality that you can adjust. Specifically, you can adjust the head angle by up to four degrees, the bottom bracket height by 10mm, the chainstay length by 15mm. While it comes spec’d with 27.5” wheels, you can install 26” wheels if you prefer the features of smaller hoops.

This is the frame that the Gstaad-Scott has rocked and rolled at World-Cup downhills and destroyed all comers. They’ve kept themselves and the bikes intact. Part of it is pilot skill, part of it is design smarts.

It’s hard to know where to begin, so possibly the best place is in the middle. And at the heart of it is a unique shock system. Called the floating link, it’s a sophisticated linkage designed to improve durability and small-bump sensitivity. It does this by setting up the pivots to move around a virtual floating point. This allows the designers to fine-tune the leverage ratio enabling the shock and linkage to function as a single system rather than mere bolted-together parts. 210mm of travel, all of which can be finely-tuned.

The floating link is in the middle of the custom-butted, hydroformed 6061 aluminum frame and rear triangle. The head tube, down tube, and right chainstay are all protected with specially-designed padding that looks good, stays put, and limits damage.

As for those adjustments, they’re rather ingenious. The included Syncros headset is a semi-integrated design, which comes with Angled Headset pieces you install. The stock head angle is 63-degrees, and the bike comes with one- and two-degree pieces, so you can adjust it as slack as 61- and as steep as 65-degrees. The bottom bracket height goes up or down 10mm by removing the pivot bolt above the bottom bracket and flipping the “chips” on either side. The chainstay length is changed by using either the forward, or rearward mounting points for the IDS-X dropouts. Taking these adjustments to the extreme can make for a long, low, super-planted feel, or you can tweak it the other way to make the bike super-lively and better suited for tighter, slower track.

A follow up on the IDS-X. This is an unique system that locks the rear axle into place. No need for pinch-bolts, which always seem to come loose when you need them to stay put. It’s based on the mating of eccentric and conical shapes on the axle and dropouts. They key into each other to lock everything into place. Besides durability, the locking also improves lateral stiffness, improving power transfer from the pedals as well as predictability of how the bike carves through turns.

In terms of the complete bike, the brake mounts are set for 203mm discs. The front end for 203mm of travel.

The Scott Gambler. It’s a downhill bike designed by you.
