2016 Reynolds 72/90 AERO Clincher Wheelset

Product Description

General Information

The Reynolds 72/90 AERO Mixed Clincher Wheelset is like having a rear disc paired with an aero front wheel. Not everyone wants to handle a 90mm deep front wheel while on aero bars. But just about everyone wants something as aero as a disc in back. This set pairs a 90mm deep AERO rear wheel with a  72mm deep AERO front wheel.
Yes, Reynolds has taken the 72 from their 72 AERO wheelset and the 90 from their 90 AERO wheelset and put them together. Makes plenty of sense. The 72 is lighter and easier in crosswinds. The 90 is heavier, but much faster. The people who gravitate toward this are typically using them in timed events, where they want as much aero as possible but don't have to worry about getting pushed around by the wind.
These wheels are both part of Reynolds' AERO line. The technology in both front and rear is shared. They are strong and durable thanks to their CR6, aka Carbon Rim 6, molding, with six different lay-ups around the rim to maximize strength and minimize weight. The rim shape is great both in headwinds and cross winds thanks to two unique Reynolds technologies. The first is DET, or Dispersive Effect Termination, a shaping that smoothes, or calms, turbulent air and reattaches it to minimize drag, particularly in crosswinds. And ISH, Integrated Step Hook, a narrow lip that both stiffens the wheel and creates a boundary layer of air between the tire and rim to keep air flow smooth, is employed in the front, but isn't in the back because the longer depth makes it unnecessary.
In terms of safety, the wheels both have Reynolds CTg and BWI built in. CTg is Cryogenic Glass Transition, which is their way of developing both the brake track and the pads so that the braking surface runs cooler, in some cases up to 53% cooler than competitors, and that means better, more consistent braking in all conditions. BWI is Brake Wear Indicator, a red line they embedded under a few layers o brake track that gets exposed once the rim is worn but before it gets dangerously thin.
The sixteen radially-laced DT Aerolite front spokes are strong enough to keep the rim straight and true, but few enough and aero enough to barely register against the wind. The twenty cross-two laced DT Aerolite rear spokes brace the wheel against torsional loads and prevent wind-up. The hubs are Reynolds-designed with DT/Swiss 240 internals for durability. The rear hub comes set up for either Campagnolo 9/10/11 speed or 11-speed Shimano/SRAM.
The wheels ship with Reynolds Cryo-Blue Brake Pads (use these to both keep braking great and satisfy the warranty), their Competitive quick release skewers (steel, 65g for the set), rim strips, valve extenders, and wheel bags. They've even embedded an Aero Valve Plug to prevent the valve stems from rattling.
The Reynolds Mixed AERO Wheelset is part of the Reynolds Assurance Program (RAP). It's essentially wheel insurance, where you purchase the plan and your wheels are covered for two years, no questions asked. You take care of the paperwork on the Reynolds Cycling site, and have 30 days from purchase here to obtain the RAP.
The Reynolds 72/90 AERO Mixed Clincher Wheelset is when you want a front wheel that's a little easier in wind and a rear wheel that's a little faster.
