2016 Orbea Alma 27 M-Team Bike

Product Description

General Information

4x4 performance in a hardtail is easy with the Orbea Alma OMR. This is the lightest, stiffest cross-country race rig from the Spanish company that was an early adopter of big wheels, embracing 29ers back in 2006. More recently, they’ve translated the magic of the Alma OMR into slightly-smaller 27.5” wheels. As a result, they offer both:  small-medium-large in 27.5, and medium-large-extra large in 29. The ends of the spectrum will want the size that reflects their height. Those in the middle will choose based on terrain and riding style.

Regardless of the wheel size you choose, the geometry has been customized to best utilize the wheel size chosen. The top tubes are 7mm shorter on the 27.5, the head tubes are 5mm shorter, the chain stays are as short as possible in both cases, with the 27.5 having 13mm shorter stays.

Across the size run, Orbea utilizes their OMR carbon. An acronym for Orbea Monocoque Race, it is the stiffest, lightest-ply mix in the Orbea universe. But it’s only as good as the design it is woven into. And there, Orbea has done a stellar job. They’ve figured out a way to give plenty of rear end compliance, which is a boon both for keeping the rear wheel on the ground and increasing comfort, without letting the bike go noodly in the lateral (pedaling) realm. Orbea calls the solution their 4x4 concept. It’s several little extra angled frame members, found between the rear of the top tube and the rear of the seat stays tube, which, thanks to their inclusion add vertical give without adding any unwanted horizontal flex.

The tapered head tube which holds a 1 1/8” to 1 1/2” steerer is an easy demonstration of that work. The flattened top tube, almost triangular down tube, rounded seat tube and multi-shaped stays are all advantages of monocoque. The BB92 bottom bracket helps brace the chain stays so they don’t flex under hard pedaling. At the top, they opted for a narrow 27.2mm seat post. The smaller diameter is more comfy as it flexes more than a 31.6mm post.

In terms of ride, here they wanted a bike that’s agile and easy to handle regardless of the speed. The seat angle is steep, the chain stays short, the bottom bracket low and the stand over low, which leads to a compact feel, with long top tube and a slack 70.5 degree head angle to keep it stable.

The brake mounts work with 160-180mm rotors. The internal DCR cable routing is designed to work with both electric and mechanical shifting. You’d put the battery in the seat post. There’s an aluminum protector on the right chain stay.

The frameset comes with an FSA headset, a cable kit, and seat collar. The complete bike comes with a Fox 32 Float Factory fork possessing 100mm of travel, along with a three-position handlebar-mounted remote. It allows you to adjust the fork from open to controlled to firm without slowing down.

The Orbea Alma OMR is the heart of a great cross-country ride.
