2016 Campagnolo Bora Ultra 35 Clincher Wheelset

Product Description

General Information

There are few upgrades for a bike more exciting than getting some super-sweet wheels. If you are looking for that perfect set of wheels that balance practicality with sheer performance and bling factor, then you can hardly do better than the Campagnolo Bora Ultra 35 Clincher Wheelset.

Like the Bora One 35 Clinchers, the Bora Ultra have the practical 35mm profile which gives them that perfect balance between keeping things light and getting a bit of aero advantage in the wind. The main difference between the Bora One and the Bora Ultra is that these Ultra use the CULT technology Campy has pioneered. If you’ve heard of Campagnolo’s CULT, but aren’t entirely certain what it means, it refers to the use of the ceramic ball bearings in combination with the bearing races made from Cronitect chromium stainless steel. The ceramic ball bearings reduce friction to a minimum while the Cronitect with thermochemical surface treatment make the sliding surface of the bearings extremely hard and resistant to wear. You’ll immediately notice the magic carpet feeling you’ll get from the first pedal stroke.

Though most wheel companies by now have carbon clincher rims, it doesn’t necessarily follow that everyone has figured out how to do them well. The sticking point is typically the brake track. Carbon braking surfaces are notoriously fickle; then add the strength versus heat dissipation qualities required for a safe alpine descent, and you’d often end up with some unfortunately heavy wheels that still didn’t brake all that amazingly well. Campagnolo has addressed this conundrum by developing what they call their 3Diamant technology. What this means is that the surface of the brake track has been treated using advanced machinery and a diamond tipped tool in order to eliminate the imperfections on the surface of the track caused by imperceivable resin deposits. Combining this braking surface with the high-performance brake pads specifically made for Campagnolo carbon wheels at the Campy Tech Lab, and you’ll enjoy a near perfect braking performance whether you are dealing with wet or dry conditions. The smooth overall braking effect will encourage you to push your descending skills to the next level.

If we’re talking about the brake-horse-power of the Bora Ultras, we need to point out how Campy makes the rims so stiff and responsive. They have used a method that they call G3 Technology. By fitting twice as many spokes on the right hand side of the rear wheel compared to the left hand, or non-drive train side, Campagnolo has made it possible to improve energy transfer, reduce the stress on the right side spokes, and increase lateral rigidity. Not only will you get better transfer of the driving torque, but this design eliminates wheel vibrations, even for heavier riders. In fact, Campagnolo has a weight limit set at a generous 240 pounds. That’s due to the tangential lacing Campagnolo has given the spokes, controlling the spoke tension even under stressed load through the three by three grouping of the spokes. Then the oversize flange allows the increase of the torsional stiffness values even more, which benefits the overall responsiveness of the wheel. The wheels also receive the Dynamic Balance treatment, which means that Campagnolo has been very systematic in how they align the carbon fabric in order to increase the strength and keep the rims in perfect balance. This care and attention to detail is also what makes the Boras among the most beautiful looking wheels in the world.

Recognizing that both pros and weekend warriors appreciate the comfort and durability that wider tires offer, Campagnolo has increased the rim width for the Boras to 24.2mm. That means that they can accommodate wider tires without having that “light bulb” effect. Wider tires not only offer better road absorption, but will give you better traction and more confidence when raging down your favorite descent. The 21 spokes with the 3G lacing in the rear is accompanied with sixteen radially-laced spokes in the front. That keeps the weight down and the strength up. Weighing just 1370 grams for the pair, the Bora Ultra 35 clinchers offer an excellent weight to durability ratio. And even if you ride Shimano or SRAM components, don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t mix those with Campy wheels. Just get the right freewheel body and you can enjoy the anarchic feeling of forcing the two component powerhouses in a warm handshake. The Bora Ultra is compatible with 9-, 10-, and 11-speed drivetrains.

With the Campagnolo Bora Ultra 35 Clincher Wheelset you will be ready to tackle anything from an Etape du Tour to kicking ass on your Saturday group ride. Whether you get them as an upgrade to you old workhorse or as the cherry on the top of you newest dream bike, the Bora Ultra 35 Clincher Wheelset will get you over all obstacles in style. Campagnolo recommends using their specially developed brake pads for best stopping results. The wheels come with the pads as well as quick releases, tire levers, and wheel bags.
